“

We could stand for a century,

staring,

with our heads cocked,

in the broad daylight, at this thing:

Joy,

landlocked in bodies that don’t keep —

dumbstruck with the sweetness of being,

till we don’t be.

Told: take this.

Eat this.

So, obviously, I was reading satirical suffragist poetry earlier today. Now I’m reading Craig Thompson’s “Blankets.” Finally. Because when you’re into graphic novels, people will want to talk about the ones they’re read and for almost the last ten years, “Blankets” has been one of the ones that people know and want to talk about, and I have to say, “No, no, I haven’t read Blankets.” I almost read it once, for a independent study I did on comics during my senior year of college, but that fell through somehow, and I ended up just reading a bunch of other stuff instead. Anyway, I’m finally reading it, so wooo.

Blankets is great! I highly recommend Habibi as well if you’re doing a Craig Thompson marathon. The art is wonderful in both.

Okay, in my opinion, when like a handful of shitty people on twitter say a shitty thing maybe it’s not 100% necessary to screencap it and share with everyone.

I feel like a lot of people on this site are pretty much fine without having that stuff in their lives, and sometimes seeing, for example, misogynistic tweets on my dash actually goes further to reinforcing messages that most women have gotten since they were little girls than they do to actually solving the problem of misogyny.

I understand that calling out is important, and sharing information is important, but there’s a fine line between solidarity and just general spreading around of misery. Especially if all the poster has actually done is screencapped someone’s crappy posts without actually, you know, saying anything to those people?

The fetishization of infantilized women has real life consequences.

The fetishization of sexualized girls has real life consequences.

The fetishization of violence against women has real life consequences.

The fetishization and exotification of racial and ethnic minorities, has real life consequences.

I know many people like to think that their preferences aren’t influenced by oppression and that their fetishes cannot possibly be a product of racist-sexist socialization, but sexuality isn’t immune to our conditioning.

In fact, our sexuality might reveal to us some of the most sexist, racist things we’ve internalized. This is easy to deny because of just how scary the truth of this can be.
